When you open Google Search Console's or SiteGuru's indexation report, you may be shocked to see a lot of pages in status Crawled - currently not indexed. The big question now is: is this a problem?

As often is the case in SEO, the answer is: it depends. In this article we'll help you understand the Crawled - currently not indexed status, and propose fixes where needed.

What "Crawled - currently not indexed" means

Google visited the URL, read it, and decided not to add it to its index. It is a choice Google made, not an error on your site.

In November 2026, Google updated their documentation to clarify that Crawled - currently not indexed doesn't have to be an issue. They added: "Google doesn't index all pages across the web, so this is a common message for many sites and doesn't necessarily indicate an issue that needs attention."

That's nice, but you'll still want your important pages to be indexed, right?

And that's the big differentiator: some pages, like collection or product pages, you definitely want to be indexed. Others, like variants of products or product pages with a different canonical URL don't really have to be indexed.

Why Shopify stores have so many of these URLs

Shopify creates several URLs for the same content. One product can be reached at its own URL, inside every collection it belongs to, and once for every variant. A collection can be reached with filters, with tags, sorted, and page by page. If you sell in more than one market or language, every one of those can exist again under /fr/, /de/ and so on.

Shopify handles most of this for you. It adds canonical tags that point copies to the main URL, and its default robots.txt blocks sorting, tag combinations, search, cart and checkout pages. But Google still finds the other copies through links, crawls some of them, and then decides not to index them. That is exactly what "Crawled - currently not indexed" is for.

In most stores, the large majority of URLs on the list fall into the "ignore" rows. What is left is your real to-do list: products, collections, content pages, and market URLs.

Why product and collection pages end up here

Although some pages don't need to be indexed, You normally want your collection and product pages to be in Google's index. If that's not the case, it is usually because one of these reasons.

  • Thin or copied content. The product uses the manufacturer's description, which hundreds of other stores also use. Google already has that text indexed elsewhere.
  • Near-identical products. The same item as separate products per colour or size, each with the same description. Google indexes one and skips the rest.
  • Empty or near-empty collections. A collection with two products and no description gives Google little reason to index it.
  • Weak internal links. The page is only reachable through a filter, a search, or an old link. If your own store doesn't link to a page, Google treats it as unimportant.
  • Sold-out products that stay online. A product that has been sold out for months, with no plan to restock, is a weak candidate for the index.
  • A new store or new pages. Google may crawl first and index later. Give new pages a few weeks before you act.

Start with the pages that make money

You probably have more pages to fix than time. Start with the products and collections that sell, or would sell if people could find them.
