.htaccess File

An .htaccess file is a file that contains server configuration for Apache webservers. For SEO, the .htaccess file is relevant because it is a way to set up redirects.

The htaccess syntax allows you to set up redirects with wildcards, making it easy to redirect to different domains, to an https connection or to a different subfolder.

But there's more: the .htaccess file can also be used to set up text compression of files, and provide caching instructions.
